O Idiota Coroado

Essa vai para os anais da idiotia universal: "Prince Charles suggested Tuesday on a visit to the United Arab Emirates that banning McDonald's fast food was crucial for improving people's diets, a British news agency reported".

A Bolsa Cai, A Bolsa Sobe

No Times Online:"Leading London shares droped 100 points in the opening minutes of trading today as markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia slumped amid worries about a slowdown in both the US and China economies. Wall Street suffered its worst losses overnight since the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001".

Ministro Assaltado

Clash of Civilizations: Entrevista com Huntington

Entrevista com Huntington na NPQ: "My view is that relations between countries in the coming decades are most likely to reflect their cultural commitments, their cultural ties and antagonism with other countries rather than other factors.

Quite obviously, power will continue to play a central role in global politics, as it always does. But usually there is something else behind conflicts. In the 18th century in Europe, the issues to a large extent involved questions of monarchy versus the emerging republican movements, first in America and then in France. In the 19th century, it involved states identifying themselves through nationalism. In the 20th century, ideology came to the fore, largely, but not exclusively, as a result of the Russian Revolution. We had fascism, communism and liberal democracy competing with each other".

Arroz e Escravidão

Um book review escrito por Philip J Havik sobre o livro de Walter Hawthorne Planting Rice and Harvesting Slaves: transformations along the Guinea Bissau coast, 1400-1900. A historia de Guinea Bissau é importante para entender o Brasil: "The central hypotheses of the book are that despite forming decentralised communities, the Balanta produce narratives that can be used as tools to reconstruct their past and their involvement in the slave trade, just like Shaw (2002) found in the case of the Temne in Sierra Leone. Secondly, far from being passive victims at the mercy of state-based societies, the Balanta developed their own strategies in order to safeguard their autonomy against external threats. Thirdly, the Balanta took up the challenge and engaged in Atlantic exchange in order to reap the benefits for their communities. Fourth, he maintains that internal divisions along the lines of age and sex shaped their reactions to the regional penetration of the Atlantic slave trade, eventually resulting in revolutionary changes in Balanta society at a social, political and economic level. In the introduction the author remarks that only after several months of interviewing did he discover that the Balanta actually participated in the slave trade. The comment is revealing as so far Balanta involvement in the trade has largely been negated, as they allegedly eschewed the practice while succeeding in keeping Atlantic and African predators at bay until the nineteenth century. Apart from correcting this erroneous trope, by establishing a direct correlation between the slave trade and changes in Balanta society Hawthorne has rewritten a chapter of Balanta history".

Num dos poucos momentos de lucidez o artigo diz: "A smokescreen still covers the African role in this pernicious trade. It is an awkward fact that the traffic could not have existed without African chiefs and traders. Europeans rarely went far from their forts; slaves were brought to them. Indeed, when the Europeans arrived the slave trade and slavery were already integral parts of local tribal economies. One of the few Ghanaian historians to touch these issues, Akosua Adoma Perbi, writes that “slavery became an important part of the Asante state [the Gold Coast's most powerful] right from its inception. For three centuries, Asante became the largest slave-trading, slave-owning and slave-dealing state in Ghana.”"

Exorcismo

Porrada

Quem dera se todos os economistas que nao cansam de falar besteira levassem uma porrada como essa que o Mankiw deu no Robert Reich:"Robert Reich says that, as a requirement for free trade deals, we should tell developing countries to "set a minimum wage that's half their median wage." The proposal raises two questions in my mind:1. Does Reich pay his nanny, cleaning person, and gardener more than half the median wage of members of his family?2. If not, should I refuse to buy his books?"

Reforma no Islam?

O colunista da Newsweek Fareed Zakaria acredita:"For those in the West asking when Islam will have its Reformation, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the process appears to have begun. The bad news is it's been marked by calumny, hatred and bloody violence. In this way it mirrors the Reformation itself, which we now remember in a highly sanitized way". Leia o resto do artigo aqui

Entrevista com Bhagwati

"if Doha doesn't work out, there's going to be billions or trillions of dollars lost. There are studies now that say this kind of thing, but no serious economist believes this rubbish. Of course some gains from trade will be lost. But it's not as if the sky will fall. All this means is, you won't be able to move forward, but that doesn't mean you will slide back. I see no reason why protectionism would break out because Doha is not moving ahead". Leia o resto da entrevista aqui

Livros Preferidos por Escritores

"J. Peder Zane, book review editor of the Raleigh News & Observer, has outdone the Times considerably in The Top Ten: Writers Pick Their Favorite Books (Norton, $14.95): From the 10 favorites proffered by 125 noted writers, he has culled the all-time Top 10. The winners (in order, from top to bottom) are: Tolstoy's Anna Karenina; Flaubert's Madame Bovary; Tolstoy's War and Peace; Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita; Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; Shakespeare's Hamlet; F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby; Proust's In Search of Lost Time; the stories of Anton Chekhov; and George Eliot's Middlemarch". Middlemarch top ten?! so rindo...leia o resto do artigo aqui.

Os Blogs e Friedman

"While 99.9% of blogs will be read only by their authors and three buddies, possibly coerced, quality asserts itself quickly and rises to the top. With no editorial straitjacket on the information or the quality of offerings, the consumer chooses by his action (reading—or not; spreading the word—or not, linking—or not) what makes a quality product. The “blogosphere” is like a little experimental universe validating consumer choice vs. regulation—and consumer choice has won a colossal victory. Trial and error may not help find the right surgeon, but it seems to be a great way to find your right media diet. By and large, blog consumers have shown an incredible sense for quality and reliability". Veja o resto do artigo aqui.

Crime e Carnaval

A Herança Ibérica

Tyler Cowen on Hayek

Kenneth Rogoff examina o problema e conclui:"As long as the status quo persists, with strong global growth and stunning macroeconomic stability, the US can continue to borrow and run trade deficits without immediate consequence. Over time, the dollar will still decline, but perhaps by no more than a couple of percent per year. Nevertheless, it is not hard to imagine scenarios in which the dollar collapses. Nuclear terrorism, a slowdown in China, or a sharp escalation of violence in the Middle East could all blow the lid off the current economic dynamic.

In principle, one can also think of scenarios in which the dollar shoots up, but overall these seem less likely. In sum, the fact that the US trade balance has defied gravity for so many years has made it possible for the dollar to do so, too. But some day, the US may well have to pay the bill for its spendthrift ways. When that day arrives, Americans had better pray that their creditors will be as happy to accept dollars as they are now". The 'system of pigs'

Leia o resto aqui

Thomas de Aquino Encontra Adam Smith

Neste artigo de Moreno-Riaño, Natural Law and Modern Economic Theory, ele investiga:
"The concept of natural law is pervasive in academic discussions of ethics, politics, and jurisprudence. However, it is much more difficult to unearth the influence of and relationship between natural law and modern economic theory within current scholarly dialogue. This unfortunate lacuna in scholarship is inter alia due to the facts that natural law suffers from an inherent ambiguity as to whether its foundations are religious and it lacks any rigorous scientific validation. This article defends and advances the importance of natural law for modern economic theory. In doing so, it presents the classical view of natural law as found in the work of Thomas Aquinas and addresses both its religious foundations as well as scientific evidence for its existence. Beyond offering a portrait and defense of natural law, this article discusses the specific contributions that natural law offers to modern economic theory in an attempt to imbue the latter with a more complete notion of humanity and existence".

Samba, Cerveja e a Alegria do Selvagem

" Guinea-Bissau ranks fifth to the last on the United Nation's human development index as it struggles to recover from a brief civil war that ended six years ago. With observers agreeing that political tensions could again spark violence, donors are reluctant to provide assistance, and thus the government remains under-funded and ineffectual."As the state is unable to control its own territory, traffickers can operate undetected."

.

Um Manual para Picaretas

Este livro, Comment Parler des Livres que l’on n’a pas Lus (How to Talk about Books that You Haven’t Read) vai certamente ser um best seller na selva. O autor, obviamente um intelectual francês, Pierre Bayard, diz: “It’s possible to have a passionate conversation about a book that one has not read, including, perhaps especially, with someone else who has not read it".

Terroristas e Rent-Seekers

Lucas vs. Lucas: On Inequality and Growth

Cordoba e Verdier escreveram este interessante paper [IMF Working Paper No. 07/17]: "Lucas (2004) asserts that "Of the tendencies that are harmful to sound economics, the most seductive, and in my opinion the most poisonous, is to focus on questions of distribution... The potential for improving the lives of poor people by finding different ways of distributing current production is nothing compared to the apparently limitless potential of increasing production." In this paper we evaluate this claim using an extended version of Lucas' (1987) welfare-evaluation framework. Surprisingly, we find that the welfare costs of inequality outweigh the benefits of growth in most cases. These calculations support the case for a research agenda that treats not only growth but also inequality as a priority".

Serviço Militar e Liberdade

Gregory Mankiw disse que "No one benefits more from the freedoms that the military defends than academics, who use the freedoms of expression more liberally than the average American. It seems particularly reprehensible for us to free ride as completely as we do." Ruth Wisse neste artigo no Wall Street Journal critica as universidades americanas dizendo:"Recent surveys confirm that university faculties have been tilting steadily leftward, but I think it is wrong to assume they have been tilting toward "liberalism" as is commonly assumed. Liberalism worthy of the name emphasizes freedom of the individual, democracy and the rule of law. Liberalism is prepared to fight for those freedoms through constitutional participatory government, and to protect those freedoms, in battle if necessary. What we see on the American campus is not liberalism, but a gutted and gutless "gliberalism," that leaves to others the responsibility for governance, and arrogates to itself the right to criticize. It accepts money from the public purse without assuming reciprocal duties for the public good. Instead of debating public policy in the public arena, faculty says, "I quit," but then continues to draw benefits from the system it will not protect".
